Segments of the house of prayer were exploded. Portions of the top story of the manor disintegrated under the blasts. (12) Ondaatje's nitty gritty and critical depiction finishes his image of the district side. "Dead steers. Ponies shot dead, half eaten. Individuals hanging topsy turvy from bridges" (Ondaatje 19). A-Level Exam Time May Change

A-Level Exam Time May Change The OE Blog The government has put forward a progressive scheme to alter the timing of A-level exams in order to allow pupils to apply to university using the grades they have actually achieved, rather than relying on ‘predicted grades’ as they do under the current system. Proponents of the scheme argue that it would result in a much fairer allocation of university places, particularly giving a better chance to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. However there are also some concerns about the impact the plans would have on sixth form education. On the surface the plan seems to make a great deal of sense â€" with our higher education system in turmoil following the introduction of raised tuition fees and the ever increasing demand for places, why not at least simplify the application procedure by selecting candidates on the basis of their actual achievements rather than vague and potentially biased predictions? Startling evidence shows that a much higher proportion of students from state schools and the most disadvantaged backgrounds actually out-perform the grades they are predicted, compared to private school pupils from better-off areas who are more likely to meet or miss their predicted achievements. However, university places are allocated on the basis of predictions, not concrete grades, and the short ‘adjustment’ window during which pupils have the opportunity to try and find a place at a more prestigious university on the basis of better-than-expected grades is far too short to provide a practical opportunity for alteration. Even George Turnbull, of the examinations division of qualifications watchdog Ofqual, claims that the ‘transfer window’ leaves too “little room for manoeuvre”. Universities Minister David Willetts agreed that the system must be “re-engineered” to allow places to be allocated on the basis of actual achievement rather than “speculative applications”. If it is truly the case that enabling students to apply after receiving their results would provide a fairer system to pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, the scheme must be applauded, but there might also be an argument for simply adjusting the system of grade predictions so that theirs are brought into line with those of other students instead. Changing the timeline of the entire academic year seems a rather dramatic solution to a problem that might surely be more simply tackled at the source, by new guidelines and boundaries for grade predictions and closer monitoring and checking of the accuracy of teachers’ suggestions. Changing the entire academic system to bring A-level examinations early enough in the year to allow time for the results to be processed before applying to university would create many difficult problems as well as solving them. For a start it would leave a yawning gap in the second and third terms of the final A-level year when sixth form students would have nothing further to study, creating huge problems for schools who would have to invent pointless syllabus fillers or allow effective truancy. Furthermore there would be a discrepancy between the dates on which students would receive their results depending on examination boards, subjects and retakes, creating an unfair advantage for those who would be able to apply earlier than others. These problems might be solved in several ways â€" it could, for instance, be extremely useful to transform the final A-level term into an opportunity for apprenticeships or work experience to be undertaken, but such a dramatic change would take a great deal of planning and organisation. In the meantime it seems facetious not to ask why universities don’t simply use AS-level results as a fair indication of a student’s academic level. At this stage the government is merely considering proposing the changes as part of the upcoming white paper due to be published in the months to come, but a great deal more thought and debate would have to be put into fine-tuning the scheme if it were eventually to be put into practice.

Foam Definition in Chemistry

A foam is a substance made by trapping air or gas bubbles inside a solid or liquid. Typically, the volume of gas is much larger than that of the liquid or solid, with thin films separating gas pockets. Another definition of foam is a bubbly liquid, particularly if the bubbles, or froth, are undesirable. Foam can impede the flow of a liquid and block gas exchange with air. Anti-foaming agents may be added to a liquid to help prevent bubbles from forming. The term foam may also refer to other phenomena that resemble foams, such as foam rubber and quantum foam. How Foam Forms Three requirements must be met in order for foam to form. Mechanical work is needed to increase the surface area. This can occur by agitation, dispersing a large volume of gas into a liquid, or injecting a gas into a liquid. The second requirement is that surfactants or surface active components must be present to decrease surface tension. Finally, the foam must form more quickly than it breaks down. Foams may be open-cell or closed-cell in nature. Pores connect the gas regions in open-cell foams, while closed-cell foams have enclosed cells. The cells are usually disordered in their arrangement, with varying bubble sizes. The cells present minimal surface area, forming honeycomb shapes or tessellations. Foams are stabilized by the Marangoni effect and by van der Waals forces. The Marangoni effect is a mass transfer along the interface between fluids due to surface tension gradient. In foams, the effect acts to restore lamellae (a network of interconnected films). Van der Waals forces form electric double layers when dipolar surfactants are present. Foams are destabilized as gas bubbles rise through them. Also, gravity pulls liquid downward in a liquid-gas foam. Osmotic pressure drains lamellae because of concentration differences throughout the structure. Laplace pressure and disjoining pressure also act to destabilize foams. Examples of Foam Examples of foams formed by gases in liquids include whipped cream, fire retardant foam, and soap bubbles. Rising bread dough may be considered a semisolid foam. Solid foams include dry wood, polystyrene foam, memory foam, and mat foam (as for camping and yoga mats). Its also possible to make a foam using metal. Foam Uses Bubbles and bath foam are fun uses of foam, but it has many practical uses, too. Fire retardant foam is used to extinguish fires.Solid foams may be used to engineer strong yet light materials.Solid foams are excellent thermal insulators.Solid foams are used to make flotation devices.Because solid foams are light and compressible, they make an excellent stuffing and packing material.A closed-cell foam called a syntactic foam consists of hollow particles in a matrix. This type of foam is used to make shape memory resins. Syntactic foams are also used in space and deep-sea exploration.Self-skin or integral skin foam consists of a dense skin with a lower density core. This type of foam is used to make shoe soles, mattresses, and baby seats.

Jeremy Bentham Criminal Justice Essay - 1609 Words

Jeremy Bentham’s Influence on the Criminal Justice System: Past and Present The delivery of punishment has changed significantly over the centuries. Up until the 19th century in England, imprisonment was not regarded as a punishment, it was merely used while the offender waited to be sentenced to their ‘real’ punishment (Bull, 2010; Hirst, 1998). Corporal punishment such as flogging, branding and mutilation, death by hanging, and transportation to other continents such as America and Australia were common punitive measures through the ages, until well into the 1800’s (Newburn, 2003). Although these extreme penalties are no longer acceptable or practised by criminal courts in England or Australia, in some ways, the past has†¦show more content†¦In other words, a person may be tempted to commit a crime if there not a strong enough deterrent in place. Hence, Bentham’s solution to crime control was to address this pleasure/pain response by imposing strict penalties proportional to the seriousness of the c rime committed to discourage people from offending (Von Hirsch, 1992). Although he did not support the death penalty, punishment for committing crime was considered by Bentham as the lesser of two evils, necessary for the health of society and the duty of the government to impose (Bull, 2010; Hudson, 2003). Punishment, for Bentham, was a way to ensure â€Å"the greatest happiness for the greatest number† (Rosen, 2003, p 221). Bentham argued that prevention, both general and specific, is paramount in controlling crime. The imprisonment of the offender serves the purpose of specific prevention. Specific prevention involves three tiers: incapacitation, reform/rehabilitation and deterrence (Hopkins Burke, 2011). Firstly, incapacitation is achieved by physically removing an offender from society, rendering them unable to reoffend (specifically, by placing them in prison). Secondly, rehabilitation seeks to take away the desire to offend, by teaching the offender that anyShow M oreRelatedJeremy Benthams Utilitarianism is a Convincing Method for Normatic Ethics891 Words   |  4 Pagesethics, utilitarianism wasn’t fully expressed until the 19th century.
